You’ve heard the cliché a thousand times: “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”
But here’s the truth that most people miss: Your network isn't just a list of names in your phone or a collection of "connections" on LinkedIn. Your network is the literal ceiling of your potential. It is the invisible force field that either holds you back in your comfort zone or catapults you toward the life you’ve always wanted.
In my book, CHANGE, I break down the six pillars of a transformed life: Communication, Habits, Attitude, Network, Goals, and Education. While all are vital, the Network pillar is often the fastest way to accelerate your results in the other five.
If you want to change your life, you have to change your room. If you want to increase your net worth, you have to increase the value of your network.
Here are five actionable ways to build the kind of relationships that change everything.
1. Audit Your Inner Circle (The Network Pillar)

Before you go out and meet new people, you need to look at the people you already spend time with. The "Network" pillar of the CHANGE framework isn't just about addition; it’s often about subtraction and realignment.
We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. If your inner circle is full of people who are complacent, negative, or resistant to growth, you will find it nearly impossible to maintain a positive Attitude or build high-performance Habits.
How to Audit Your Network:
The Energy Test: After spending time with someone, do you feel inspired or drained?
The Growth Test: Are the people around you challenging you to be better, or are they pulling you back into old versions of yourself?
The Alignment Test: Do their values align with the "CHANGE" you are trying to implement in your own life?
Building a high-level network starts with being intentional. You don’t need 500 acquaintances; you need five "growth allies" who refuse to let you stay where you are.
2. The Law of "Value First"

The biggest mistake people make in networking is entering a conversation with their hand out. They want a job, a lead, a favor, or a mentor. They approach relationships as a transaction rather than a transformation.
In the world of high-level business and personal development, the most successful people are the most generous. They lead with value. When I wrote my #1 bestselling book on Business Decision Making, one of the key insights was that the best decisions are made when you have a wealth of diverse, high-value perspectives around you. You get those perspectives by being the person who gives first.
Ways to Add Value Immediately:
The Double Opt-In Introduction: Connect two people in your network who could benefit from knowing each other.
Share Knowledge: Send an article, a podcast episode, or a resource that solves a problem they mentioned.
Offer Your Skills: If you’re a marketing genius, offer a quick 10-minute audit of their site. If you’re a great listener, be the sounding board they need.
When you become a "Value-Creator," people don't just want to know you: they want to help you. Your net worth grows as a byproduct of the value you've deposited into others.
3. Position Yourself in the "Right Rooms"

If you are the smartest, most successful person in the room, you are in the wrong room.
Transformation requires exposure to higher standards. You need to see what is possible. This is why the Education pillar of CHANGE is so closely tied to your Network. You learn by proximity.
In today’s world, "rooms" aren't just physical offices or conference halls. They are masterminds, exclusive online communities, and high-level training programs.
How to Find the Right Rooms:
Invest in Access: Sometimes the "room" requires an entry fee: whether that’s a seminar, a high-ticket course, or a charity gala. Don't see this as a cost; see it as an investment in your future self.
Look for "A-Players": Seek out environments where people are talking about ideas and goals, not other people or problems.
Be the "Rookie": Be okay with being the least experienced person in a group. That is where the most growth happens.
As we discuss at PodCentral Publishing, your environment dictates your output. If you want world-class results, you need a world-class environment.
4. Prioritize Depth Over Distance
Networking isn't a numbers game. It's a depth game.
It is better to have three people who would take your call at 3:00 AM than 3,000 followers who don't know your middle name. Real relationships are built on vulnerability, shared experiences, and consistent communication.
In the CHANGE framework, Communication is the first pillar for a reason. How you articulate your vision and how you listen to others' needs determines the strength of your bonds.
Building Depth:
Ask "Below the Surface" Questions: Instead of "What do you do?", ask "What is the biggest challenge you’re solving right now?" or "What are you most excited about this year?"
Be Authentic: Don't show up as the "perfect" version of yourself. Show up as the real version. People connect with struggles and breakthroughs, not polished facades.
Follow the 80/20 Rule: Spend 80% of your time nurturing your top 20% of relationships. These are the people who will have the biggest impact on your life and vice versa.
5. The System of Follow-Up (Consistency is Key)

The fortune is in the follow-up.
Most people are great at the "meet," but terrible at the "keep." They meet someone incredible at an event, exchange cards, and then... nothing. The relationship dies before it even starts.
Building a network that increases your net worth requires the Habit of consistency. You have to stay top-of-mind. You have to nurture the seed you planted.
The Professional Follow-Up System:
The 24-Hour Rule: Send a personalized message within 24 hours of meeting someone. Mention something specific from your conversation.
The Quarterly Check-In: Set a reminder to reach out to your key connections every 90 days. No agenda: just a "Thinking of you, how is [Project X] going?"
Celebrate Their Wins: When you see a connection post about a promotion, a new book launch, or a personal milestone, be the first to congratulate them.
Success isn't an accident; it's a result of the systems you put in place. Whether it's driving a Maserati or launching a bestselling book, the peak is reached through the support of a network you’ve diligently built.
Final Thoughts: It’s Time for a CHANGE
Your network is a garden. If you don't water it, it withers. If you don't weed it, the thorns take over. But if you tend to it with intention, generosity, and the principles of the CHANGE framework, it will provide a harvest for the rest of your life.
Remember, personal transformation isn't a solo sport. You need the right people in your corner to push you, pull you, and walk beside you.
Are you ready to take control of your future? Start by looking at your phone. Who are you calling today to add value? Which "room" are you entering next?
