You’ve heard it a thousand times: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” It’s a classic quote from Jim Rohn, and while it might sound like a tired cliché, it remains one of the most fundamental truths in personal development. But in the world of Brady Young Change, we don’t just settle for clichés. We look at the data, the research, and the real-world results of "Business Savages" who have climbed to the top.
In my book, CHANGE: Simple Concepts That Will Change Your Life Forever, I break down transformation into six essential pillars: Communication, Habits, Attitude, Network, Goals, and Education. Today, we are diving deep into the Network pillar.
Your network isn’t just a LinkedIn profile or a stack of business cards in a drawer. It is the foundation of every opportunity you will ever have. It is the bridge between where you are and where you want to be. If you’re feeling stuck, look at your inner circle. Are they pulling you up, or are they anchors holding you back?
The Foundation of Opportunity

Networking often gets a bad rap because people associate it with sleazy sales tactics or awkward mixers. But in the CHANGE framework, the Network is defined as the bridge to future doors. Think about the last big breakthrough you had: a new job, a massive business deal, or a life-changing piece of advice. Chances are, it didn't happen in a vacuum. Someone opened a door for you.
When you intentionally build a high-performer inner circle, you aren't just looking for "contacts." You are looking for people who challenge your perspective, share your values, and hold you to a higher standard. As I often discuss on the Brad Young CHANGE 2025 podcast, a "Business Savage" knows that survival in the modern world requires a pack. You need a network that acts as a force multiplier for your efforts.
Actionable Strategy: The Network Audit
You can’t build a skyscraper on a swamp. Before you can upgrade your network, you have to audit your current environment. This is an actionable transformation strategy that we teach to help people take control of their future.
Step 1: Identify the "Drainers" and the "Gainers"
Take a piece of paper and list the ten people you spend the most time with: whether in person, on the phone, or even in group chats.
The Gainers: These are the people who leave you feeling energized, inspired, and challenged. They are doing big things and encourage you to do the same.
The Drainers: These are the complainers, the critics, and the people who are comfortable with mediocrity. They might be good people, but they aren't helping you grow.
Step 2: Set New Boundaries
You don't have to "fire" your friends, but you do need to manage the proximity. If you want to reach peak performance, you cannot spend 80% of your time with people who have zero ambition. Start shifting your time toward the "Gainers."
Curating Your Inner Circle

Building a network of high-performers requires a mindset shift. You have to be the kind of person that high-performers want to be around. In the updated 2025 edition of CHANGE, we emphasize that your network is a reflection of your own value.
If you want to attract "Business Savages": people who are strong, adaptable, visionary, and genuinely enthusiastic: you have to embody those traits yourself. High-performers aren't looking for people who want to "pick their brain." They are looking for people who bring value to the table.
How to Attract High-Performers:
Lead with Value: Never start a relationship by asking for a favor. Offer a resource, a connection, or a genuine compliment on their work first.
Be a "Business Savage": Focus on your own Education and Habits (the other pillars of CHANGE). When you are consistently improving, people will naturally want to be in your orbit.
Use the Right Tools: Use my #1 bestselling book, Business Decision Making, to refine how you interact in professional spaces. Better decisions lead to better outcomes, which naturally attracts higher-level players to your circle.
Decision Making and the Inner Circle
Your network doesn’t just provide opportunities; it influences your decision-making process. In my book Business Decision Making, I talk about the importance of external perspectives. When you are faced with a high-stakes choice, your inner circle acts as your unofficial board of advisors.
If your circle is filled with people who play it safe, you will likely make "safe" (and often stagnant) decisions. If your circle is filled with visionaries, you will be pushed to think bigger and take calculated risks that lead to massive growth. The "Network" pillar is inextricably linked to how you handle the business world.

Transform Your Life Through Proximity
Real change doesn't happen by accident. It happens through intentional action. By applying the Proven Network Framework, you are taking one of the most significant steps toward your total transformation.
Remember, the goal isn't just to "know" people. The goal is to build a support system that aligns with your Goals and fuels your Attitude. When you combine a powerful network with the other five pillars of CHANGE, you become unstoppable.
