The Proven CHANGE Framework: Your Roadmap to Building a High-Performer Network

You’ve heard it a thousand times: "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." It’s a classic Jim Rohn-ism that has stood the test of time for one simple reason: it’s true. But here’s the problem: most people treat their social and professional circles like a backyard garden that they never bother to weed. They let whoever happens to be around: old high school friends, toxic coworkers, or unmotivated relatives: take up the most valuable real estate in their lives.
If you want to reach the next level of success, you can’t leave your network to chance. You need a strategy. You need a framework.
At Brady Young Change, we specialize in transformation. Our flagship book, CHANGE, breaks down human optimization into six crucial pillars: Communication, Habits, Attitude, Network, Goals, and Education. Today, we’re doing a deep dive into the "N": the Network.
Whether you’re looking to scale your business, land a C-suite role, or simply find more fulfillment in your personal life, your network is the engine that will get you there. Here is your roadmap to building a high-performer inner circle using the CHANGE framework.
Why the "Network" Pillar is Your Secret Weapon
In the world of personal development, we often focus heavily on internal shifts: changing our habits or fixing our attitude. While those are vital (and we cover them extensively in CHANGE), your network is an external force that can either act as a tailwind or a massive anchor.
A high-performer network does three things for you:
It expands your "Possible": When you hang out with people who are doing "impossible" things, those things become normal to you.
It provides "Information Alpha": High performers have access to insights, trends, and opportunities before they hit the general public.
It holds the mirror up: A true peer circle won't let you get away with mediocrity. They’ll call you out when you’re playing small.

Step 1: The Network Audit (Weeding the Garden)
Before you can add high-performers to your life, you have to make room for them. This starts with a ruthless audit of your current circle.
Grab a piece of paper and list the ten people you interact with most frequently. Now, categorize them:
The Engines: These people inspire you, challenge you, and push you to be better. They are high-performers or are on their way to becoming one.
The Anchors: These people are stuck. They complain, they’re cynical about growth, and they drain your energy every time you speak to them.
The Neutrals: These are "comfort" friends. They aren’t hurting you, but they aren’t helping you grow either.
The Transformation Strategy: You don’t have to "fire" your friends, but you do need to reallocate your time. If 80% of your time is spent with "Anchors," you will eventually sink. Start shifting your schedule to prioritize the "Engines."
Step 2: Identify Your Four Layers
A high-performer network isn't just a bunch of rich people in a room. It’s a diverse ecosystem. According to the research we’ve integrated into the CHANGE framework, a truly powerful network consists of four distinct layers:
Mentors & Sponsors: These are people 2-3 levels ahead of you. They provide the "map" for where you want to go.
The Peer Performance Circle: These are your "battle buddies." People at your level who are as hungry as you are. You push each other.
Knowledge Brokers: These are the "connectors." They might not be in your industry, but they know everyone. They sit at the crossroads of information.
Rising Talent: Never ignore those coming up behind you. They keep you fresh, teach you new technologies, and remind you of the "beginner’s mind."
Step 3: Mastering the Value-First Connection
The biggest mistake people make when trying to level up their network is acting like a "taker." If you reach out to a high-performer asking to "pick their brain," you’ve already lost. High-performers are protective of their time.
In our book CHANGE, we emphasize that Communication (the first pillar) is the foundation of a great network. You must communicate your value before you ask for anything.
Actionable Strategy: Use the "Micro-Touch" method. Instead of a long-winded email, send a short note: "I saw your recent project on X and it helped me solve Y. I wrote a quick summary of how we implemented it here [link]. Hope it’s useful!"
You aren't asking for a meeting. You aren't asking for advice. You are providing a "gift" of feedback and utility. This is how you get on a high-performer's radar.

Step 4: Decision Making and Your Inner Circle
Networking isn't just about "who you know"; it's about how those people influence your choices. This is where Brad Young’s #1 bestselling book, Business Decision Making, becomes essential.
Every major decision you make: whether it’s a career move, an investment, or a lifestyle change: is filtered through the perspectives of your inner circle. If your network is full of risk-averse people, you will make "safe," stagnant decisions. If your network is full of strategic thinkers, you will learn to calculate risk and spot opportunities that others miss.
Building a high-performer network is essentially an investment in your future decision-making quality. When you have a "Personal Board of Directors" to lean on, your margin for error shrinks, and your potential for massive wins grows.
Step 5: Become a Knowledge Broker
If you want to be invited into elite circles, become the person who connects others. High-performers value "connectors" more than almost anyone else.
The Transformation Strategy: Aim to make one "double-opt-in" introduction per week. Find two people in your network who could benefit from knowing each other, ask them both if they’d like an intro, and then make it happen. By doing this, you become the "hub" of the wheel. People start coming to you because you are a source of value.
The 6 Pillars Working Together
The CHANGE framework isn't a set of isolated boxes; it's an integrated system.
Your Education gives you the knowledge to provide value to your Network.
Your Habits give you the discipline to maintain those relationships.
Your Attitude determines if people actually want to be around you.
Your Goals act as the North Star that tells you which people you need to find.
When you align all six, transformation isn't just possible: it's inevitable.

Take the Next Step
Building a world-class network doesn't happen overnight. It’s a series of small, intentional choices made every single day. If you’re ready to stop "winging it" and start building a life by design, it's time to dive deeper into the frameworks that work.
