Let’s be real for a second: we’ve all been there. You wake up on a Monday morning, fired up and ready to conquer the world. You’ve got your new workout gear laid out, your meal prep containers are stacked neatly in the fridge, and you’ve promised yourself that this is the week everything changes.
By Wednesday, you’re hitting snooze. By Friday, you’re ordering pizza and wondering where that "new you" disappeared to.
If this sounds familiar, don’t beat yourself up. You’re not lazy, and you don’t lack willpower. The truth is, most people try to change their lives using a broken map. They focus on the destination but completely ignore the vehicle that’s supposed to get them there. That vehicle is your habits.
In my book, CHANGE: Simple Concepts that will CHANGE your life forever, I break down a tactical blueprint for transformation. At the heart of that blueprint is the CHANGE Framework. Today, we’re diving deep into the "H" of that framework: Habits.
What is the CHANGE Framework?
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of habit formation, let’s look at the big picture. The CHANGE Framework isn’t just a catchy acronym; it’s a lifestyle architecture. It stands for:
Communication
Habits
Attitude
Network
Goals
Education
While each of these pillars is vital, Habits are the glue. Without consistent habits, your goals are just wishes, your education is just trivia, and your network is just a list of contacts. Habits are the small, consistent actions that shape your outcomes day by day.

Why Most Habits Don’t Stick
Most people fail at habit building because they try to change too much, too fast. They try to overhaul their entire existence in twenty-four hours. In the world of Business Decision Making, we call this high-risk, low-reward strategy. You’re betting everything on a burst of motivation that is biologically guaranteed to fade.
Motivation is like a lightning strike: it’s powerful, but it doesn’t last. Habits are like the power grid: they provide a steady, reliable flow of energy that keeps the lights on even when the storm passes.
If you want habits that actually stick, you need to stop relying on how you feel and start relying on how you operate.
Strategy #1: The Power of the 1% Shift
In my sessions and throughout my writing, I talk a lot about the 1% shift. We often think that massive success requires massive action. But the reality is that small, almost imperceptible improvements lead to massive results over time.
Think of it like an airplane taking off from New York headed for Los Angeles. If the pilot shifts the nose of the plane just 3.5 degrees to the south, the plane will end up in Washington, D.C. instead of California. On the runway, the difference is invisible. After a few thousand miles, the difference is an entire region.
Actionable Strategy: Pick one habit you want to start. Now, make it so small it’s impossible to fail. Want to read more? Commit to one page a day. Want to get fit? Do five pushups. The goal isn’t the five pushups; the goal is becoming the person who doesn’t miss a workout.
Strategy #2: Environment Design Over Willpower
If you have to choose between willpower and environment, choose environment every single time. Even the most disciplined person will eventually succumb to a toxic or distracting environment.
In Business Decision Making, we analyze how the physical and social landscape affects the bottom line. The same applies to your personal growth. If you want to eat healthier but your pantry is full of junk food, you’re forcing your brain to fight a battle it will eventually lose.
Actionable Strategy: Audit your surroundings. If you want to wake up and work out, put your shoes right next to the bed. If you want to stop checking your phone first thing in the morning, charge it in another room. Make the "good" habits easy and the "bad" habits difficult.

Strategy #3: The Identity Anchor
This is a concept I dive deep into within the CHANGE framework. Most people focus on what they want to achieve (the goal). Successful people focus on who they want to become (the identity).
When you say, "I’m trying to quit smoking," you’re still identifying as a smoker who is struggling. When you say, "I’m not a smoker," you’ve shifted your identity. Your habits should be votes for the person you want to become.
Every time you choose a salad over a burger, you’re casting a vote for a "healthy person." Every time you sit down to write a memo instead of scrolling through TikTok, you’re casting a vote for a "productive leader."
Habits in Business Decision Making
Building habits isn't just for your morning routine or your fitness goals. It is the foundation of professional excellence. In my book Business Decision Making, I discuss how the best CEOs and entrepreneurs don't actually make better "one-off" decisions: they have better habits of decision-making.
They have a habit of looking at the data first. They have a habit of seeking dissenting opinions. They have a habit of reviewing their failures without ego. When you turn your professional skills into habits, you free up your mental energy for high-level strategy.

Connecting the Pillars: The Network Effect
You can’t talk about habits without talking about your Network. This is another core piece of the CHANGE Framework. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with, and that includes their habits.
If your inner circle spends their weekends complaining and stagnant, guess what your habits will look like? But if your network consists of high-performers, their "normal" becomes your "baseline." You don't even have to try as hard to build good habits because the social pressure is pulling you upward.
Actionable Strategy: Look at your closest friends. Are their habits the ones you want to have? If not, it’s time to expand your circle. Find mentors, join mastermind groups, or simply hang out where the high-performers hang out.
The Journey is the Destination
Transformation doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens in the mundane moments. It happens when you’re tired, when you’re bored, and when nobody is watching.
The CHANGE Framework is designed to give you a roadmap, but you’re the one who has to drive the car. Remember, habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. They might not seem like much today, but in a year, you won’t even recognize the person you used to be.
