Goal Setting Matters: How to Use the CHANGE Roadmap for Real-World Results

Let’s be honest for a second: most people treat goal setting like a wish list they send to a North Pole that doesn’t exist. We’ve all been there: the burst of motivation on January 1st, the shiny new gym membership, the "this is the year I write my book" proclamation. And yet, by the time the February frost sets in, most of those goals are buried under a pile of "I’ll do it tomorrow" and "I’m too busy."
At Brady Young Change, we don’t believe in wishes. We believe in systems. If you want to transform your life, you don't need more willpower; you need a better roadmap. That’s why we developed the CHANGE framework.
Transformation isn’t a single event; it’s a process built on six crucial pillars: Communication, Habits, Attitude, Network, Goals, and Education. Today, we’re diving deep into the G: Goals: and how you can use the entire CHANGE roadmap to ensure your goals actually produce real-world results.
Why Vague Intentions Are Goal Killers
Research shows that people who write down their goals are significantly more likely to achieve them than those who keep them stored in the back of their minds. But writing them down is only the first step. The real reason most goals fail isn't a lack of desire; it's a lack of clarity and structure.
Vague goals like "I want to be successful" or "I want to get in shape" are impossible to hit because you haven’t defined the target. In my book, CHANGE, I talk about how goals serve as the GPS for your life. If you don't put in a specific address, the GPS can't give you directions.
To get real results, your goals need to be integrated into a holistic system of change. You can't just set a goal in a vacuum. You have to look at how your habits, your network, and your attitude either support or sabotage that goal.

The CHANGE Roadmap for Goal Success
To move from "wishing" to "winning," you need to apply the CHANGE pillars to your goal-setting process. Here is how you can use the roadmap to build goals that actually stick.
1. Communication (Mastery and Leadership)
Goal setting is, at its core, a conversation with yourself and others. If you can’t clearly communicate what you want, you’ll never get it.
Actionable Strategy: Practice "Identity Communication." Instead of saying "I want to lose 10 pounds," communicate to yourself and others: "I am becoming the type of person who never misses a workout." When you lead yourself with clear, identity-based language, your actions follow your words.
2. Habits (The Engine of Transformation)
A goal is a destination; a habit is the vehicle that gets you there. You don't "achieve" a goal; you habitualize it.
Actionable Strategy: Use "Habit Stacking." If your goal is to read more (Education), stack it onto an existing habit. "After I pour my morning coffee, I will read five pages of a book." By anchoring your new goal to an existing routine, you remove the friction of starting.
3. Attitude (The Mindset Shift)
Your attitude determines how you handle the "middle" of the goal: the part where the initial excitement has worn off and the hard work begins.
Actionable Strategy: Pivot from a "Gap" mindset to a "Gain" mindset. Most people focus on the distance between where they are and where they want to be (the gap). Instead, measure your progress backward. Look at how far you’ve come since you started. This shift in perspective keeps your motivation high.
4. Network (Building Your Inner Circle)
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. If your inner circle doesn't value growth, your goals will feel like a burden.
Actionable Strategy: Audit your network. Identify one "High-Performer" in your life who has already achieved what you’re aiming for. Ask them for fifteen minutes of their time or simply observe their habits. Surround yourself with people who make your "impossible" goals look normal.
5. Goals (The Roadmap Itself)
This is the heart of the matter. Effective goals must be specific, measurable, and: most importantly: actionable.
Actionable Strategy: Break your "Big Hairy Audacious Goal" into 90-day sprints. Don't worry about where you'll be in five years. What do you need to do in the next 12 weeks? 90 days is long enough to see real progress, but short enough to keep the pressure on.
6. Education (Continuous Learning)
The person you are today isn't equipped to achieve the goals of the person you want to become. You have to bridge the knowledge gap.
Actionable Strategy: Commit to "Just-In-Time" learning rather than "Just-In-Case" learning. If your goal is to start a business, don't spend six months studying accounting. Spend a week learning how to get your first customer. Apply research-backed methods to your specific hurdles.

Business Decision Making: The Professional Edge
In my #1 bestselling book, Business Decision Making, I explore how top-tier executives and entrepreneurs make choices that move the needle. Goal setting in a professional context requires a different level of precision.
When you're setting business goals, you aren't just managing yourself; you're managing resources, time, and opportunity costs. One of the key insights from the book is that indecision is a decision. Many professionals fail to reach their goals because they are paralyzed by the fear of making the "wrong" choice.
To achieve real-world results in business:
Define the Non-Negotiables: What are the three results that must happen this quarter for your business to thrive?
Shorten the Feedback Loop: Don't wait until the end of the year to see if you hit your target. Review your metrics weekly. High-quality decisions are based on high-quality data.
Optimize for Action: A "good" plan executed today is infinitely better than a "perfect" plan executed next month.

Putting It All Together: Your Action Plan
Personal transformation doesn't happen by accident. It happens by design. If you're ready to stop spinning your wheels and start making real progress, here is your 24-hour challenge:
Identify ONE Goal: Not five. Not ten. Just one. Pick the one that, if achieved, would make everything else easier or unnecessary.
Apply the CHANGE Filters:
Transformation is a journey, and every journey needs a guide. Our books, CHANGE and Business Decision Making, were written to be those guides for you. They aren't just theories; they are playbooks for the modern world, packed with new research and timeless wisdom.
